Physicians Bone Up On Remedies Once Scorned – Acupuncture, Hypnosis, Massage

A recent trend has found many Western physicians turning to alternative treatment methodologies including acupuncture, hypnosis, meditation, guided imagery and massage to treat common ailments like back and joint pain, head colds, obesity, upset stomachs and anxiety.  Twenty years ago, the mind-body connection was largely dismissed by doctors in the United States.  Today, it is a staple of integrative medicine, the discipline that blends complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with conventional treatments and places more emphasis on treating the whole person.  About seventy-five percent (75%) of medical schools now have some CAM courses in the curriculum and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine includes thirty-nine (39) health centers including the Mayo Clinic plus Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Duke and Yale Universities.
